What Does It Really Mean to Be Homeless?”

When most people think of homelessness, they picture someone sleeping rough on the streets. While this is one of the most visible forms, homelessness is much broader — and often hidden.

People can be homeless if they’re:

  • Sofa surfing between friends’ houses
  • Living in temporary accommodation like hostels or B&Bs
  • Staying somewhere unsafe or unsuitable, such as a car or a squat

In Calderdale and across the UK, many people face homelessness not because of one mistake, but because of a combination of challenges: job loss, relationship breakdowns, mental health issues, rising rents, and a lack of affordable housing.

At Nest, we believe no one should be left without the basics. That’s why we provide rucksacks to people sleeping rough and home starter packs for those moving into a place of their own. It’s a small gesture with a big impact — offering dignity, comfort, and the hope of a new beginning.
